Grout is often treated as an afterthought, but it is the element that most affects how tile looks five years after installation. Choosing and maintaining the right grout prevents staining, cracking, and discoloration.
Cement Grout
Sanded grout is appropriate for floor tiles and any joint wider than 1/8 inch. Unsanded grout is for wall tiles and joints narrower than 1/8 inch. Both require sealing after installation and periodic resealing over time.
Epoxy Grout
Epoxy grout is virtually stainproof and requires no sealing. It is significantly more expensive and more difficult to install, but for shower floors, kitchen counters, and other high-exposure areas, the performance advantage is substantial.
