Electrical Planning: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Electrical planning early in the design process costs very little and pays dividends for as long as you live in the home.

The 6-Foot Rule

NEC requires an outlet within 6 feet of every point along the floor line. But better planning places outlets where devices will actually be used — at each end of the sofa, at the console table, in the reading nook.

GFCI and AFCI Protection

GFCI outlets are required within 6 feet of water sources. They detect shock hazards and cut power in milliseconds. AFCI breakers detect electrical arcing that precedes many house fires and are required on bedroom and living room circuits.
