Accent Walls: When They Work and When They Do Not

Accent Walls: When They Work and When They Do Not

The accent wall is one of the most debated techniques in interior design. Done well, it adds visual interest and a focal point without overwhelming a room.

The Architecture Principle

The best accent walls are defined by architecture — a wall with a fireplace, a feature window, or significant architectural detail. When the accent wall is determined by architecture, the effect feels intentional rather than arbitrary.

Color Selection

The accent color should complement rather than contrast with the dominant wall color. Colors 2 to 3 values darker or more saturated than the dominant wall color create the right level of contrast without overwhelming the space.
